Audi claims the 3.0L single twin-scroll turbocharged V6 (EA839) produces 354 HP and 369 Ft-Lbs of torque at the crank. If we factor in a typical 27% drivetrain loss for the AWD system, this translates to about 258 WHP and 269 WTQ. But what does it actually make at the wheels? Let's dive into the real-world numbers.
The predecessor to the EA839 was a similar 3.0L V6 engine but with a 1.3L Eaton supercharger instead of the single turbo. While it delivered decent power and ample torque down low, it hit a performance ceiling at around 500 HP, requiring a supercharger upgrade to push beyond that limit.
Once our B9 S4 was strapped onto the Mustang dyno, the results were unexpected. The power measured at the wheels was nearly the same as the claimed crank numbers! Our B9 S4 put down 347 WHP and 363 WTQ – only 3 HP and 6 Ft-lbs less than the claimed crank figures. Factoring in the 27% drivetrain loss, this means our S4 is making approximately 440 HP and 461 WTQ at the crank. That's a remarkable gain of 90 HP and 92 TQ over Audi's official numbers!
HOW DO THESE NUMBER COMPARE?
The torque curve on the EA839 engine is impressive. Peak torque is available as early as 2,500 RPM, maxing out at 3,560 RPM. However, torque begins to fall off rapidly around 4,650 RPM. Horsepower builds smoothly and consistently, holding peak HP between 5,500rpm and 6,500rpm. It will be interesting to see how the power curve shifts once we move to a Stage 1 tune.
STOCK B9 DRAGY TESTING
Along with dyno numbers, we tested the real-world performance metrics of the stock B9 S4 using Dragy for the 0-60 MPH, 1/4 mile, and 60-130 MPH times. The results were as follows:
Quarter Mile: 12.85sec @ 107mph
0-60 MPH: 4.61sec
60-130 MPH: 14.52sec
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR THE S4?
We will be installing our suite of ARM bolt-on upgrades, including downpipe, midpipe, and intake. While pairing these upgrades with a Stage 1 tune from Jackal Motorsports Look out for our next post on this car, the Stage 1 report!
