S58 Stock Dyno — Baseline Test

What Does a Stock S58 Actually Make?

A stock 2022 BMW G82 M4 Competition xDrive made 449 WHP and 443 WTQ on a Mustang Dynamometer on 93 octane pump gas. BMW rates the S58 at 503 hp at the crank. This is what that translates to at the wheels in the real world.

BMW claims 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque at the crank for the G82 M4 Competition. Those are factory numbers, measured at the engine, before power is lost through the drivetrain. We wanted to know what the S58 actually puts down at the wheels. So we strapped a completely stock 2022 G82 M4 Competition xDrive to the dyno and let it tell us.

No modifications. No tune. 93 octane pump gas. This is the real baseline for the S58, straight from the factory.

One pull was completed for the stock baseline. The numbers align closely with other independent S58 stock dyno results published across the community, giving us confidence this is a representative result for the platform.

What the Stock Curve Tells Us

The S58 stock dyno curve is a well-behaved, confident pull. Torque builds early and hard, already over 327 ft-lbs at 2,500 RPM and climbing fast through the low and mid range. It peaks at 443 WTQ around 5,200 RPM before tapering gradually toward the rev limiter.

Horsepower follows a smooth, progressive climb, peaking at 449 WHP around 5,200 RPM and holding strong and flat all the way to the fuel cut near 7,000 RPM. That long, sustained power delivery near redline is a signature of the S58 and one of the things that makes it such an exceptional platform to tune.

One of the more telling characteristics of the stock S58 curve is how cleanly it holds power through the top end. There is no significant drop-off near redline, which tells you the factory tune is deliberately conservative and the engine has considerable headroom sitting unused from the factory.

BMW's Factory Numbers vs Reality

BMW claims 503 hp and 479 lb-ft at the crank. We measured 449 WHP and 443 WTQ at the wheels. That represents approximately a 10.7% drivetrain loss through the xDrive system, which is actually lower than the traditional 15% rule of thumb often quoted for AWD vehicles. In other words, the S58 is delivering its factory power figure efficiently, with minimal losses through the drivetrain.

It is also worth noting that the S58 is widely regarded as underrated from the factory. BMW has a long history of conservative crank figures, and independent testing across the community consistently shows the S58 punching above its stated output. The 449 WHP result here is consistent with other published stock G8X dyno data, confirming this is a genuine, repeatable baseline for the platform.

What This Means for Your M4

449 WHP and 443 WTQ is where the 2022 G82 M4 Competition xDrive starts. It is a strong foundation by any measure, and the S58 stock dyno curve shows an engine that is healthy, well-built, and clearly holding back. The flat top-end power delivery and the early torque build are signatures of an engine with real headroom still in it from the factory.
